World Patient Safety Day 2026 Highlights Safer Healthcare
World Patient Safety Day 2026 is being observed on September 17 with a focus on improving the safety of healthcare for people living with noncommunicable diseases, or NCDs.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has selected “Safe care for noncommunicable diseases” as this year’s theme, accompanied by the slogan “Safe care for life!”.
The annual campaign brings governments, healthcare providers, patients and communities together to strengthen patient safety and reduce preventable harm in healthcare.
Why Noncommunicable Diseases Need Continuous Care
People living with noncommunicable diseases often require healthcare over long periods of time. Their treatment may involve several healthcare facilities, different medical professionals and multiple stages of care.
According to WHO, these long-term and multi-setting care pathways can create different points where patient safety risks may occur. Such risks can emerge during prevention, diagnosis, treatment, long-term management and self-care.
