Bungie is changing the roadmap for Marathon, with the game’s next major update now scheduled for December 8, 2026. The update, called Symbiosis, will introduce a permanent PvE experience alongside several new multiplayer and social features.

The content was originally planned for a September 22 release. Bungie said it adjusted the schedule to give the development team more time to improve the experience and respond to player feedback.

Marathon’s Big Update Moves to December

The Symbiosis update is positioned as an important step in the next phase of Marathon’s development.

One of the biggest additions will be a permanent PvE experience, giving players another way to engage with the game beyond its traditional PvPvE extraction format.

Bungie said the new PvE experience is designed to provide additional ways to explore and progress through Marathon’s world.

The December update will also refresh the Perimeter zone and introduce a new Runner shell.

Social Space and Team Deathmatch Are Coming

Symbiosis will expand Marathon’s multiplayer experience with a new social space that includes a firing range.

The update will also introduce an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, giving players another competitive option alongside the game’s existing extraction-focused gameplay.

These additions could give players more ways to spend time in the game between traditional extraction sessions.

October Update Will Reset Progression

Before the December expansion arrives, Bungie plans to release a smaller update on October 6.

The Nightfall Refresh update will reset player progression and the in-game economy. It will also introduce refreshed rewards, quality-of-life improvements and live balance adjustments.

Bungie said the reset is intended to establish a healthier progression experience after issues affected the game’s Season 2 progression and rewards.

Bungie Moves Away From a Strict Seasonal Schedule

Another major change involves how Marathon will receive future content.

Bungie said it is moving away from a strict seasonal schedule rather than tying major updates to fixed seasonal deadlines. The studio wants more flexibility to build, test and improve features before releasing them.

The change reflects Bungie’s broader plan to respond to feedback about Marathon’s depth, progression and long-term reasons to keep playing.

A New Direction for Marathon

The December Symbiosis update represents a significant expansion of Marathon’s gameplay structure.

With permanent PvE, a social space, experimental Team Deathmatch and improvements for new players, Bungie is broadening the ways players can experience the online game.
